The 7th annual Mayor’s Challenge—Bike, Walk and Wheel Week is a weeklong program of events designed to encourage all Columbians to use active modes of transportation to get to work, school or wherever they need to go around town.

You and your friends will enjoy it so much you’ll think about walking or biking more often. You know, to return that book to the library, grab a loaf of bread for a picnic, or to get some fresh air on the trail. Bike, walk or wheel your way to have fun, get healthier and help the environment. It’s easier than you might think, and this weeklong challenge can prove it to you.

Saturday, May 3
• Bike, Walk & Wheel Week Family Ride! Join in for a 7-mile round trip ride on the MKT Trail to Flat Branch Park for the Kick Off Celebration! We'll meet at the Forum Trailhead at 12:30 p.m.
• Bike, Walk & Wheel Week Kick Off Celebration is where you can register for the event, pick up your t-shirt, win prizes and enjoy music. Wear a 2008 Bike, Walk & Wheel Week t-shirt to the YouZeum from 4:00-8:00 p.m.
• Make a boat out of twigs, leaves and grasses with us at Float Your Boat, A Children's Nature Activity. Watch your creation float gently down Flat Branch Creek from 1:00-3:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 4
• Cycle Recycle! Register at 12:30 p.m. to receive a free, refurbished bike (while supplies last). Giveaway begins at 2:00 p.m. and continuing until 3:00 p.m. Free bike licensing available. Contact Robert Johnson at (573)442-7189, ext. 28. Columbia/Boone County Health Dept., 1005 W. Worley St.
• Trail To A Cure Bike Ride/Walk/Run begins from the Katy Trail in Rocheport, Mo. Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. and the post-event celebration at Les Bourgeois Winery goes from 2:00-5:00 p.m.
Monday, May 5
• Skate Party at Empire Roller Rink from 6:30-8:30 p.m., 1305 Bus. Loop 70 E. Wear your 2008 Bike, Walk & Wheel Week t-shirt.
• Want to be a better commuter? Join us for Bicycle Maintenance and Commuting Tips from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the GetAbout Columbia office, 1010 N. 7th St. Learn the art of basic bike maintenance and how to choose the best route and clothing.
Tuesday, May 6
• Spring Health & Fitness Expo and Awards is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at The ARC, 1701 W. Ash. See the latest in active gear and get up to date on issues that affect your health. Mayor's Fitness Awards follow from 7:30-8:00 p.m.
Wednesday, May 7
• GetAbout Columbia Office Open House lasts from 4:00-7:00 p.m., 101 N. 7th St. Check out our new digs! We even have prizes!
• Women's Bike Repair and Maintenance goes from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Tryathletics, 1605 Chapel Hill Rd. This class is free. Contact Janet Godon at (573)442-7189, ext. 29.
Thursday, May 8
• Columbia Try Transit Day! Everybody rides for free on the city buses, all day long! Give it a try!
• PedNet Scavenger Hunt is from 6:00-8:00 p.m. starting at Grill One 5, 15 S. 6th St. Have fun the active way! Register your team between 5:00-6:00 p.m. There's a $10 entry fee for this event.
Friday, May 9
• Breakfast Station Day! Enjoy a free breakfast from 7:00-9:00 a.m. as you bike, walk or wheel about town. KFRU, KPLA and KBXR will broadcast live. There are many locations around town—click the map below to find out where!
Saturday, May 10
• Mother's Day Weekend Ride where all moms and kids are invited to join us for a 7-mile ride to Flat Branch Park and back. No training wheel riders please. Register by calling (573)442-7189, ext. 28. All registered riders receive a special Mother's Day gift! Free bike rental is available for this event. We'll meet at the Twin Lakes Shelter at 11:00 a.m.
